Future of Birds

What if there were no birds in the future and the swan was seen as the unicorn is now? How could you explain the magic of a flock of birds to a child?

In the future the spring is silent because there are no birds. Gone are the giant flocks that once used to darken our skies and fill our mornings with bird song.

Certain chemicals we used caused egg shells to weaken and young birds that did survive to die in infancy. A first only a few noticed, but more and more people began to see that the giant flocks were thining out.

This future seems now closer than ever, but could it happen?

At one time there were billions of passenger pigeons. Huge flocks were miles long. Sadly the bird became extinct. The passenger pigeon is but one example out of many. It was up to 40% of the total bird population in North America.

What shall we tell the children of the future when there are no more birds? How will we explain the mystery of flight to a young child?

Many debunkers will claim that birds never existed. They will say that flight is impossible for so large an animal.

It is easy to claim that ancient writings are nothings more than tall tales or fantastic fables.

Will the swan become a myth like the unicorn?

We must preserve the birds as a cultural treasure for our most valuable resource - the young. Children are the future. They represent what we will become.

It is up to us to make sure we still have birds in the future.

Or we shall have a silent spring.
